Using Vegetation as Concealment

Green Bean Man

Just as the Green Giant uses vegetation to conceal himself, doing the same in World of Tanks is proven to be an effective strategy.

As mentioned in my previous post, concealment comes in two different varieties.  The type your tank comes out with straight from the garage, and the concealment you can create for yourself through the use of trees and bushes.

The trees and bushes are separated into two categories.  Those with foliage(leafy appearance) and those without.

Chart showing tree and bushes with and without foliage

This distinction is made to highlight the variability between the concealment offerings of foliage vs no foliage.

Bare bushes and trees will offer an additional twenty-five points to your concealment rating, while bushes and trees with foliage will offer fifty.  Given that you are able to keep your vehicle's spotting points fully concealed.

This would mean that if your tank is coming out of the garage with fifteen percent concealment and you are able to hide all the points of your tank behind say a bare bush, your concealment rating would go up to forty percent.

However, simply putting a bush between yourself and the enemy is not the whole story.

1. As depicted in the chart >>>  When a bush/tree is outside the fifteen meters radius of a tank, it becomes opaque in sniper mode.  When a bush/tree becomes opaque this means the concealment is now working both ways.  It is concealing your tank and the enemy.  In this case, the opaque bush/tree is now also working against your spotting distance.

2. As you move within fifteen meters, the bush/tree will become transparent again.  This will allow you to retain your concealment bonus while maximizing your spotting distance as the bush/tree no longer has a negating effect on your tank's spotting distance.

The same is true for when your enemy is attempting to spot you.  If you are getting spotted with no one in sight, the enemy either has superior view range and/or is taking advantage of this bush mechanic.

The following video is an in-game execution of the bush/tree mechanic

"Exceptions" to Vegetated Concealment

1. The vegetated concealment factor is capped out at effectively 80%.  This means that no matter how many bushes you stack in between yourself and the enemy, the bushes will only provide a maximum of an additional 80% concealment.

This chart shows various combinations of how concealment behaves when layering bare and foliaged bushes/trees.

The basic premise is just to show that no matter how you put it, you will always be capped at 80% additional concealment when using bushes/trees.

2. At the moment of opening fire, all bushes/trees within a 15m radius of your vehicle "disappear" for a split second.  This split second however is enough for you to get spotted if you are within anyone's spotting distance during the brief absence of concealment. This is not an effect you are able to visually experience.  Meaning that bushes will not appear any different to you after you fire.

**It is important to mention that only your concealment is affected when you open fire.  If tanks from your team are in the same bushes are you, they still keep their concealment.  The bush concealment mechanic behaves on a case-to-case basis.**

Building a Strategy

Factors mentioned in this post
  • Bush concealment disappears within a 15m radius after firing
  • You can spot through a bush while keeping the additional concealment if you are within 15m of said bush
Factors not yet mentioned
  • Tanks will stay spotted for a minimum of 5-10 seconds after they are outside of enemy spotting distances.  According to the Wargaming Wiki is exact time is based on RNG(Random Number Generator).

Combine the three factors and you get this...

Biting Yourself in the...

Just because concealment behaves on a case-to-case basis, doesn't mean you are invulnerable to inconsiderate/ignorant teammates.

While you aren't getting spotted, your teammate definitely is.  This attracts fire to their position which directly affects your vehicle well being.

Takeaway

  • Maximize your concealment potential.
  • When making a decision of whether to open fire, in a situation when you are relying on bushes/trees for concealment, back up for them to turn opaque before firing on the enemy.
  • Be aware of your teammates' behavior and be considerate of those around you.
  • Keep whupping ass.
